Kung fu is a traditional Chinese martial and cultural art. As is the case with most challenging undertakings, kung fu requires consistency, diligence, and time. Through practice, patience and perseverance, progress can be achieved and lead to physical and mental benefits.
The core of the RIKFC's kung fu training is the practice of Jow ga kung fu, a style that originated in southern China in the early years of the twentieth century. It has elements of both southern and northern kung fu. The practice of learning Jow ga, and kung fu in general, is an interesting and challenging pursuit. Training with the RIKFC consists of the following:
-basic physical conditioning to improve balance, coordination, and flexibility -training in kung fu stances to improve leg/core strength and utilizing transitions between stances for more dynamic movements -drills for punches, kicks, blocks, evasive techniques, and other basic self-defense skills, in addition to sparring practice -learning/practice of kung fu forms, sequences of movements that integrate many core techniques -kung fu weapons training, which teaches coordination and control beyond the practitioner's own body/limbs -lion dance, a cultural practice that incorporates kung fu training to channel energy to perform the lion and the accompanying lion dance music
Through kung fu study, RIKFC practitioners also develop a more keen awareness of the ideals of teamwork, cooperation, humility and respect toward self and others.
